    Offense or Defense?

At Ranburne High School Todd Whitmore played offense and defense. At East Mississippi JC he starred on defense. Where will he play at Alabama?

"If it were me, I’d put him on defense because he runs so well," East Mississippi coach Tom Goode says. "But Alabama may need people on offense. Whitmore could be a great one on offense too."

Whitmore is now enrolled at Alabama and is participating in Spring practice as an offensive guard. He's currently running with the second team, but he's expected to push for a starting job by next Fall.

Goode played several seasons in the NFL as an offensive lineman. He’s also coached the offensive line as an assistant at Alabama and Mississippi State. As an old offensive line coach, Goode understands the temptation of switching Whitmore to offense.

"He’s the kind of kid that any offensive line coach would love to have," Goode says. "Usually a kid with his combination of strength, quickness, and athletic ability ends up on defense. But he’ll make one heck of an offensive lineman if that’s where they put him."

That combination of strength, quickness, and athletic ability is something that Alabama’s offense line has been lacking for years. Mike DuBose wants to correct the deficiency. That’s fine with Whitmore.

"I’d like defense better. But I won’t be disappointed if I’m an offensive lineman. Position really doesn’t matter that much. I’m just glad to be playing for Alabama."
